“You don’t need to understand someone’s identity in order to respect it” is often framed as a compromise with intolerance, like it’s conceding that it’s okay to think someone’s gender is bullshit as long as you don’t say that out loud, but frankly, I think it’s more concerning if someone believes they can understand the full spectrum of human identity. Doing mental gymnastics to cram everybody’s lived experience into a familiar analytic framework isn’t what respect looks like.
When I first saw the statues of he first King and Queen of Hyrule in Tears of the Kingdom I was like “oh, great, another fictional species where the men are all monstery and the women look like humans wearing body paint”, but then I saw the first flashback and nope, actually they’re an interspecies couple – the Queen is Hylian.
So why did I get the impression from the statue that they were both supposed to be Zonai?
Then I did another shrine and realised: the statue depicts the Queen with Hylian features, but Zonai proportions. You can tell just by looking that the sculptor was Zonai because they messed with the Queen’s proportions to bring her in line with Zonai beauty standards.

The fact that anti-abortion laws and anti-transgender laws are both being implemented en masse, at the *same* time, by the *same* people (who, it hardly needs to be remarked, are overwhelmingly neither women nor transgender) should be enough to convince any reasonable person that the narrative of conflict between and women’s and transgender is, first and foremost, a divide-and-conquer strategy by the far right.

God I’d forgotten how much I loved West of Loathing. One of my friends bought me the sequel, Shadows Over Loathing, and I’m having such a blast. They could make 20 of these games and I’d play every single one of them. Easily the most fun I’ve ever had with stick figure-based gaming, which is saying something because I grew up on the internet in the 2000s
